Dance Like Nobody's Watching (Baila como si nadie te estuviera viendo)
Claudia Raymat weighs in at a tender 22 years of age. She had never taken any real pictures before 2010 and yet has put together a stunning series of images titled Baila como si nadie te estuviera viendo (Dance Like Nobody’s Watching). These photographs are of three ballerinas (two from Costa Rica, one from Cuba) dancing through the streets of Havana. On the iconic malecón boulevard, in front of the Capitolio building, on the avenida de Prado, looking into Havana from El Morro castle, dancing, jumping, even cycling a bici-taxi. These images do not seek the contrast of beauty and ruin but instead take the elegance and the beauty of the ballerinas and infuse this with the spirit of the Havana. The result is spectacular, it seems that the City itself becomes an extension, a natural background to an uncommon talent.

I was born in Cuba on May 28, 1990. My generation is the one of the so-called Special Period, a very difficult time for Cuba, filled with shortages and hardships. Perhaps growing up in a country of so many nuances creates in one’s soul the need to capture its many shades. I studied painting and piano as a child. I even tried to write poems or stories, but none of these things could capture with precision that which my eyes saw.

One day in 2010, while Internet surfing, I came upon an image that would change my world—Kevin Carter’s emblematic photo of the hungry child and the vulture. That day, I made up my mind that what I wanted was to take pictures that would touch the hearts of other people like it had touched mine. That was the way I wanted to channel my feelings. Nothing had ever moved me so much. And those were my beginnings in the world of photography.

When I was five years old, I wanted to be a ballerina. I think that most little girls dream of being a ballerina one time or another in their lives. I wanted the long legs and to jump as high as the clouds. I studied ballet for one year with the Ballet Nacional de Cuba.

When, at 20, I at last got hold of my first camera, a Nikon D40, I invited three ballerina friends of mine—two from Costa Rica, one from the Ballet Nacional de Cuba—to the Malecón at dusk to take what became my ballet themed pictures. Since that day, I have succumbed to a complete addiction to the ballet and dance related pictures.
