I love these photos, they were taken back in the late 1990s and represent a much less grittier or modern take on Havana than many of the newer books on Havana and may be seen as a bit stereotypical – The Tropicana Dancer coming out of the water, the man on horseback etc. But, and this is a big but, the pictures are simply so stunningly beautiful that I don’t care and I want to hold onto that image for the day. And Eddy was kind enough to let us run a feature in the 2008/09 magazine so he gets a lot of kudos from us. Still relevant, still sumptuous.

Quien me soñó. Quién me nombra.
¿O es que habré soñado yo?
Siempre sospecho que yo
Soy vástago de la sombra.

“Quién me soñó. Quién me nombra…”
Raúl Luis

Who dreamed of me? Who named me?
Or was it me that dreamt?
I've always suspected
That I was Shadow’s child.

“Quién me soñó. Quién me nombra…”
Raúl Luis
Suelta la crin de la ondulante cola,
abierta la nariz, el ojo esquivo,
poco es el llano a su impaciencia sola.

“La salida del cafetal”
Joaquín Lorenzo Luaces

Release your undulating tail
with flaring nostrils and aloof regard:
The plains are nothing to your solitary impatience.

“Leaving the plantation”
Joaquín Lorenzo Luaces
Ser el último en el viaje
tiene, amigo,
sus ventajas:
todos los que van delante de uno
son también –también animan
y enriquecen– el
paisaje.

“Privilegio del último”
Sidroc Ramos

To be the last on a journey has,
my friend,
advantages:
Those who go before us
enliven and enrich the scene.

“The last trip”
Sidroc Ramos
Tu modo de moverte
es suave y opulento.
Cargada curva
de locura.
Todo atiende a tu gesto.

“Fuego en la noche”
Roberto Manzano
The way you move
is sleek and opulent.
With brimming curves
that drive one mad.
We wait for you to give the sign!

“Fire in the night”
Roberto Manzano
