The prizes for the 33rd International Latin American Film Festival were awarded on Sunday, December 11, 2011, in a ceremony that was so sober that it could be described as lackluster. With few surprises as several prize-winners had already begun to look like likely candidates, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico were ratified as the big three in the movie industry in the region (the last were the top film producers during the 1940s and 50s).

The topics of corruption and drug trafficking stood out both among competing and prize-winning films. The First Coral for feature film, as well as Best Original Soundtrack, Art Direction and Costume Design went to the Mexican film “El infierno,” directed by Luis Estrada. The film depicts the transformation of a deportee who on his return to his hometown finds no better solution to his miserable existence than to become involved in drug trafficking, becoming in time a drug kingpin, with dramatic consequences.

Another film about violence and corruption, the Brazilian “Tropa de elite 2-O inimigo agora é outro,” directed by José Padilha, which was the clear favorite, received the Jury”s Special Prize and awards for Best Direction and Editing.

Also from Brazil, “O abismo prateado,” directed by Karim Ainouz, a drama about lost love, received the Second Coral. The film also won Corals in the categories of Soundtrack and Photography as well as the Coral for Best Actress.

The complexities of love in the relationship of a college student and a prostitute are the focus of “Fábula,” a film by Cuban filmmaker Lester Hamlet, which took Third Coral Prize in the Fiction Feature Film category.

The jury awarded a Special Mention to “Un cuento chino,” directed by Sebastián Borensztein (Argentina-Spain), which was chosen to open the Festival and became one of the best-liked films during the festival.

It was no surprise that the Audience or Popularity Prize went to “Juan de los muertos,” directed by Alejandro Brugués, the first zombie movie made in Cuba. The showing at the Payret Theater on Prado St. required the intervention of the police to keep order among the hundreds of viewers who strived to get into the theater. The solution was an extra showing at midnight.

Other significant awards went to “Agnus Dei, cordero de dios” (Mexico), by Alejandra Sánchez Orozco, First Coral in the Documentary category; “Distancia” (Guatemala), by Sergio Ramírez, Coral in the First Work category; “El chico que miente” (Venezuela-Peru), Coral for Best Script to Marité Ugás and Mariana Rondán; Heleno (Brazil), Coral for Best Actor to Rodrigo Santoro.

A special mention should be made to a film that did not win any Corals but took home five collateral prizes from different institutions and associations, and which was presented the day before. Directed by Ian Padrán, the Cuban film “Habanastation,” which, in the words of the jury ‘shows Cuba”s social reality from a human point of view, with optimism and hope,’ received five prizes: the United Nations Children”s Fund UNICEF Award; the coveted Glauber Rocha Award, sponsored by the Prensa Latina News Agency; the Cuban Journalists Union Film Critics Club Award; the Latin American Cinema website cyber-vote; and the Vigía prize, awarded by the Festival sub-site in Matanzas.

The film, which has been a hit in Cuba this year, had previously won the best feature film award at the Traverse City Festival in Michigan, organized by US filmmaker Michael Moore, and has been chosen to represent Cuba at the 2012 Oscars Awards nominations in the category of best foreign film. 

The Film Festival is over, but December still has more coming: the International Crafts Fair, FIART, from December 8-18 and the International Jazz Festival from December 15-18, 2011.

  December 7, 2011: What”s worth seeing
Although it is still uncertain what films are most likely to win the Coral awards, including the fact that the audience”s reaction (with a few exceptions) has been generally lukewarm, among the films that I have personally seen, I would bet on the Brazilian thriller ” Tropa de élite 2,’ which brilliantly tackles drug trafficking and corruption, a topic that has been the focus of other competing films as a reflection of a tragic reality in Latin America. Straightforward, with no unnecessary digressions and without going down the well-worn and predictable path, the excellently made Tropa’?leaves no one indifferent.

Meanwhile, the Argentinean production ‘Un cuento chino’ is a pleasant film to watch (after the hectic proposal from Brazil). It is a comedy, yes, but not the slapstick kind. It is fine and subtle film with very strong humanist associations, which seeks the knowing smile and identification from the viewers. According to the word on the street, it”s a strong contender for the Audience Award.

Competing Cuban films that audiences have been able to assess include ‘Fábula’ directed by Lester Hamlet; ‘Chamaco’ directed by Juan Carlos Cremata, ‘Juan de los muertos’ directed by Alexander Brugués, and ‘Habanastation’ directed by Juan Padrán. ‘Fábula’ and ‘Chamaco’ immerse themselves in complex and heartrending worlds. The former, which is based on a short story by Alberto Garrandés, explores the relationship between a young college student and a prostitute, and the intrusion of another person in their affair. The soundtrack is based on music by popular musicians and singers Harold and Ruy Adrián Lápez Nussa, Santiago Felié, Polito Ibá?ez, Raél Paz, Adríán Berazaín and Silvio Rodríguez.

‘Chamaco,’ which is faithful to Abel González Melo”s play of the same name, reveals the harshness both of the poetry and sordidness of the world that takes place in Havana at night.

‘Habanastation’ follows the formula of The Prince and the Pauper, in this case, two boys from Havana from very different social backgrounds. The director hopes the film will be nominated for the Oscars and, to this end, is putting into practice unheard-of methods in Cuba, such as fundraisers at restaurants in the city with the performance of popular musicians.

‘Juan de los muertos,’ arguably the most eagerly awaited Cuban film this year, stands out not only because it is the first Cuban zombie movie with great special effects, but because of its uninhibited, ironic and even mocking view of today”s reality in Cuba and its absolutely entertaining plot.

Collateral screenings include a restored and complete copy of the all-time classic ‘Metropolis,’ Fritz Lang”s futuristic fantasy, in which a splendid city is maintained by thousands of underground slaves. The music that accompanies this silent film will be performed live by pianists Leonardo Gell and Darío Martín.

Another much-awaited film is ‘7 días en La Habana’ (7 days in Havana), that tells seven different stories (one for each day of the week). The film, which is based on three scripts written by Leonardo Padura, the most sought-after Cuban narrator today, is co-directed by Benicio Del Toro, Pablo Trapero, Elia Suleiman, Julio Medem, Gaspar Noé, Juan Carlos Tabío and Laurent Cantet. Before its completion, the film was sold to 40 different countries at the past Cannes Film Festival.

Unfortunately, ‘Vinci,’ directed by Eduardo del Llano and based on a passage in the life of Leonardo da Vinci, was not accepted in the competition because of its non-Latin American theme, an unconvincing reason for its director and film buffs.

With the start of the Havana Latin American Film Festival in December, those who throughout the year have hardly—or never—set foot in one of the very few movie theatres that are worth going to (a significant number of theatres have been closed down due to construction problems while others are in a sorry state), and prefer to stay at home and enjoy film rentals, practically take every movie house by storm. They search high and low for the most up-to-date listings, whether online, in the newspapers, on billboards outside theatres, or through the grapevine. But, whatever the vehicle, one thing is certain—cinemas are packed full during the festival.

The Karl Marx Theatre was the venue chosen this year for the festival”s opening ceremony, and as always, was packed full. After the opening speech by Alfredo Guevara, director of the festival, and performances by Harold Lápez-Nussa and his small jazz band accompanied by El Solar de los Seis, a folkloric music ensemble, the Argentinean actor of Chinese origin Huang Sheng Huang went on to the stage to present the competing film ‘Un cuento chino,’ which he co-stars. The lights went out and the silver screen was suddenly filled with moving images: The Festival had begun.

The Havana Film Festival holds many attractions for the public, including the presence of favourite stars, such as Patricia Pillar from Brazil, who is well-known to Cubans not only because it”s her third visit to the Island (this year she is a member of the jury) but because of the many soap operas which she has starred in and which Cuban TV viewers have enjoyed so much.

The expectations surrounding certain Cuban films that were not admitted in the competition drive many people to the movies to see that ‘special’ film. One of those films, ‘Vinci,’ based on an incident in Leonardo da Vinci”s life, and directed by Eduardo del Llano, has been the subject of much commentary due to harsh differences between the festival”s directors and the Institute of Cuban Cinema (ICAIC). Whatever the reason for having been left out in the competition, the truth is that everybody wants to see the film and find out what the fuss is all about.

It is too early to make any predictions but some films are already getting much attention from the public. I can personally recommend ‘Un cuento chino’ (Marco Aurelio Award to Best Picture at the Rome Film Festival and the Fassbinder Award in Germany). It is a pleasant comedy, with excellent performances, subtle humour and humanism that deals with the subject of solitude, abandonment and the need to communicate. “Tropa de Élite 2,’ which deals with police corruption and the fight against crime, and is directed by Oscar-nominated José Padilla from Brazil, was a box office hit in its country with a record attendance of over ten million viewers. ‘Miss Bala,’ directed by Gerardo Naranjo, and based on a true story in which a queen beauty is involved in drug trafficking, addresses a troubling reality: the spiral of violence in Mexico. Another film that will surely attract much public is “Todos tus muertos,’ a film from Colombia, which won the Best Cinematography Award at the Sundance Festival. On the Cuban side, ‘Juan de los muertos’ is sure to attract moviegoers as it is Cuba”s first film about zombies. Alejandro Burgués”s film is a comedy set in a Havana filled with zombies that hunger for human flesh, and in which a scoundrel takes advantage of the situation to make money. Meanwhile, Habanastation, by Cuban director Ian Padrán, is competing in the First Work category and seems to be a strong candidate for an award.

Apart from the competition, the festival includes a showcase of contemporary world cinema (German, French, Spanish, Serbian, and Polish, among other). For movie buffs, this part of the festival is as important as the competing films, as it is a unique opportunity to get in touch with such a comprehensive range of cinematographies from all over the world.

One thing is certain, baseball, the current soap operas, even the scarcity of products in Havana”s markets take second and even third place during the Havana Latin American Film Festival and for two whole weeks, the flicks take centre stage.

Cuban cinema has gathered accolades from around the globe; a glance at the list below reveals awards and honorable mentions for a great number of films. Before the revolution, Cuban cinema existed in a diluted form controlled by the U.S. film industry.

Buena Vista: Where Film Comes to Life This week, this majestic dame of a city plays hostess to the 30th International Festival of New Latin American Cinema. Hundreds of film producers, actors and participants alike have flown in from across the globe, mostly from South and Central America, though there have been eminent European and American visitors here too, with names such as Mike Leigh and Benicio del Toro crowning the list of heavyweights who are familiar to Western audiences.

Film fever: International Festival of New Latin American Cinema During the first two weeks of December, a virulent plague takes hold of Havana. Immunisation is impossible and there’s no option but to surrender. The consolation is that there are so many fellow’?sufferers with whom to compare notes on symptoms, cures and pulling extended sickies from work.
