    Commemoration

  • In 1953, on the centenary of José Martí’s birth, the Federation of University Students decided to pay tribute to Martí’s memory in what would become known as the March of the Torches. After the Revolution of 1959, the March of the Torches acquired a more festive mood. Today, many of the students who take part in the march are driven by the festive atmosphere of the celebration. Sixty years after the first march, however, one thing is certain: the streets of Havana continue to fill with youth holding torches on the evening of January 27. Havana, Cuba

    Commemoration

  • The date of November 27th is a dark spot for Cuban history: eight medical students were executed on that day in 1871, accused of desecrating the tomb of Spanish journalist Gonzalo Castañón. The students were all between the ages of 16 and 21 years old. Since then, the youth of Cuba assembles at the foot of the stairway of the University of Havana to start a procession that goes to the monument located right at the far end of the Paseo del Prado where it meets the Havana Malecón. On that spot, overlooking the sea, students of all ages pay tribute to the youth killed by the Spanish government. Over the years, the date has also become a reason for Cuban youth to meet and celebrate. Havana, Cuba
